În 1947, patru judecători germani care au activat pe bancă în timpul regimului nazist se confruntă cu un tribunal militar pentru a răspunde acuzațiilor de crime împotriva umanității. Judecătorul șef Haywood ascultă probe și mărturii nu doar de la inculpatul principal Ernst Janning și avocatul său Hans Rolfe, ci și de la văduva unui general nazist, un căpitan idealist al armatei americane și martorul reticent, Irene Wallner.
