În inima frumoasei și istoricei vale a Dordogne (Franța), o echipă de studenți de arheologie și profesorul lor lucrează pentru a descoperi ruinele unui castel din secolul al XIV-lea. Pentru profesorul Edward Johnston, proiectul reprezintă punctul culminant al viselor sale. Cu ajutorul profesorului asistent Andre Marek, fiul său Chris și studenții săi Kate, Stern și François, Johnston a înregistrat progrese deosebite nu numai în săparea castelului La Roque, ci și a unei mănăstiri și a altor structuri din satul din apropiere Castlegard. Dar lucrurile sunt pe cale să nu funcționeze ... Profesorul Johnston este suspect de binefăcătorul săpăturii - International Technology Corporation, condus de Robert Doniger - și se îndreaptă spre New Mexico în căutarea de răspunsuri.
