Nava exploratoare USS Palomino se întoarce pe Pământ după 18 luni de căutări nereușite în căutarea vieții extraterestre, când echipajul întâlnește o navă presupus pierdută, USS Cygnus, plutind în apropierea unei găuri negre. Nava este controlată de Dr. Hans Reinhardt și de robotul său monstruos, dar uimirea și admirația inițială pe care echipajul Palomino le simte față de navă și de rezistența acesteia la puterea găurii negre se transformă în groază pe măsură ce descoperă planurile lui Reinhardt.
