Candva, in primii ani ai secolului al XX-lea, tanarul si frumosul Eugene Morgan e pe cale sa se insoare cu Isabel Amberson, fiica unei instarite familii din Indianapolis, dar face greseala sa-si umileasca logodnica in public. Aceasta il pedepseste, casatorindu-se cu un alt barbat. Cum nu-si iubeste sotul, Isabel isi revarsa toata afectiunea asupra fiului sau, George, pe care il rasfata excesiv. Dupa mai multi ani, ramasa vaduva, Isabel isi reintalneste fostul logodnic, care ii cere din nou mana.
