Filmul lui James Bridges este o imbinare de genuri la moda: film de suspense, film catastrofa, film despre mijloacele de comunicare. De-a lungul anilor ’70, fiecare din aceste genuri si-a dovedit cu prisosinta priza la public. Realizatoarea unei populare emisiuni TV (Jane Fonda) si operatorul ei (Michael Douglas) sunt martori involuntari ai unui incident la o centrala nucleara californiana. Filmul lor este confiscat si ascuns, iar grupuri financiare interesate sa ii reduca la tacere nu ezita sa il suprime pe dispecerul Godell (Jack Lemmon) in timpul unui interviu, motivand ca, dereglat psihic, reprezenta un pericol public. "Sindromul chinezesc", caz de avarie in care reactorul scapat de sub control poate topi totul dedesubt, pana in partea cealalta a Pamantului, trezeste o dubla reactie de indisciplina in lant la Centrala si la televiziune.
