Oreki Houtarou este un elev de liceu minimalist. Într-o zi, se alătură Clubului de Literatură Clasică la cererea surorii sale mai mari. Acolo îi întâlnește pe Chitanda Eru, Fukube Satoshi și Ibara Mayaka. Chitanda este o fată calmă, frumoasă, dar devine întruchiparea curiozității când spune: "Sunt curioasă." Fukube este un băiat zâmbitor, cu o memorie fantastică, care se autointitulează bază de date. Ibara este o fată scundă și este strictă cu ceilalți și cu ea însăși. Încep să investigheze un caz care a avut loc acum 45 de ani. Indicii ale misterului sunt ascunse într-o colecție veche de lucrări ale foștilor membri ai Clubului de Clasice. Colecția se intitulează "Hyouka."
