Hrdinom vojnovej drámy je dvanásťročný rozviedčik Ivan. Vojnový štáb, pre ktorý cez front prenáša dôležité správy, nedokáže pochopiť, kde sa v chlapcovi berie toľká nenávisť k Nemcom. Len Ivanove sny a spomienky prezrádzajú, že Ivan prestal byť dieťaťom vo chvíli, keď mu nacisti priamo pred očami zavraždili matku. Nadporučík Gaľcev chce pre Ivana lepšiu budúcnosť a preto nalieha, aby odišiel do suvorovského učilišťa. Podplukovník Griaznov však rozhodne, že Ivan má aj naďalej pre štáb vykonávať riskantnú prácu. Jedného dňa sa však už nevráti. Po skončení vojny Gaľcev v archíve gestapa nachádza doklad o tom, že nacisti Ivana popravili.
