Muž, ktorý vášnivo obhajuje ľudské právo zomrieť, sa dočkal radu priaznivcov i odporcov. Doktor Jack Kevorkian (Al Pacino) chcel vždy pomáhať ľuďom odísť z tohto sveta. Smrť ho fascinovala a vždy ju videl ako súčasť prirodzeného poriadku vecí. Často tiež hovoril o práve na dôstojnú smrť. Pri svojich pravidelných nočných pochôdzkach po nemocnici vždy pozoroval oči umierajúcich, či mu neprezradí niečo viac. Práve tieto pochôdzky mu vyniesli nelichotivú prezývku doktor Smrť. Kevorkian sa po stretnutí s jedným ochrnutým pacientom, ktorého kvalita života sa prakticky rovnala nule, rozhodol prejsť od slov k činom a sám začal pracovať na stroji, ktorý nazval Mercitron. Mal jednoduchým stlačením tlačidla pacientovi umožniť jednoducho a dôstojne ukončiť svoj život, ak si to budú želať. Umožnil tak vznik úplne nového odboru medicíny - eutanázia. Sám poskytoval v tejto oblasti poradenstva. Začalo to obyčajným inzerátom v novinách, potom prišla prvá pacientka a onedlho o tom mal počuť celý svet...
