Príbeh je rozprávaný očami hlavnej hrdinky Meg Murryovej, ktorá bojuje s nízkym sebavedomím a túži zapadnúť medzi ostatných spolužiakov. Je dcérou svetoznámeho fyzika, je inteligentná a talentovaná, ako jej brat Charles Wallace. Ich situáciu skomplikuje zmiznutie ich otca pána Murreyho, ktoré má drvivý dopad na celú rodina a ich matke to zlomí srdce. Charles, Meg a spolužiak Calvin sa po týchto udalostiach dozvedia o existencii tzv. božských bytostí, ktoré prišli na Zem, aby našli pána Murreyho. Spoločne sa vydávajú na dobrodružnú cestu, pomocou skladania časopriestoru sú prenášaní za hranice fantázie, kde musia bojovať so silami zla. Na zem sa môžu vrátiť iba vtedy, keď nájdu silu k poraziť temnotu, ktorá sa rýchlo šíri celým vesmírom.
