Victor Maynard je jedným z najobávanejších a najdrahších nájomných vrahov v krajine. Zároveň je najstarším zabijakom, ktorý pokračuje v rodinnej tradícii založenej už jeho starým otcom. Problém však tkvie v tom, že práve toto rodinné remeslo so sebou nesie príliš málo príležitostí na stretnutie vysnívanej ženy. Rosie je zase nezávislá, škodoradostná a veselá zlodejka, ktorá prišla na dokonalý podfuk. Po tom, čo sa neúspešne pokúsi okradnúť bohatého Fergusona, stane sa Victorovým terčom. Victora však okamžite zasiahne jej zlodejská drzosť, šokujúca zmyselnosť a nakoniec aj vlastné zistenie, že nie je schopný zabiť ju. V tej chvíli sa z neho stáva ochranca, ktorý sa so svojou korisťou vydáva na nekonečnú bezcieľnu cestu, aj keď sa im ju pokúsi skrížiť nejeden neprajník – či už Victorova matka, úhlavný nepriateľ, prípadne potenciálny Victorov nástupca.
