Každý rok sa približne tri milióny nezadaných žien v Amerike presťahuje do neznámeho bytu. Nevedia, kto v ňom pred nimi žil, nepoznajú jeho majiteľa a ani si nerobia starosti s výmennou zámku na dverách. Film Intímna pasca je práve o takejto žene. Mladá a pekná doktorka Juliet Dermerová (Hilary Swank) sa po rozchode s manželom presťahuje do Brooklynu. Chce začať nový život v prekrásnom a priestornom apartmáne, ktorý sa zdá byť až příliš dokonalý. Záhadné udalosti ju vedú k podozreniu, že v byte nie je sama a čoskoro sa jej obavy potvrdia. S hrôzou zistí, že okúzľujúci majiteľ bytu Max (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) je ňou nebezpečne posadnutý. Keď sa Juliet pokúsi oslobodiť od jeho posadnutosti, nasleduje krutá hra na mačku a myš.
