Príbeh na základe skutočných udalostí rozpráva o živote dvoch rôznych párov v dvoch rôznych časových obdobiach. V jednom príbehu sledujeme 19-ročného vysokoškolského študenta Chrisa Gregoryho, ktorý nájde zmysel života, až keď spozná spolužiačku Samanthu a obaja sa zamilujú. Hrdinom paralelného príbehu je Jorge Bolivar, bohatý dedič rodiny výrobcov rumu, ktorý od narodenia trpí cystickou fibrózou. Dedičné ochorenie mu ťažko poškodzuje pľúca a podľa prognózy by sa nemal dožiť ani dvadsiatky. Keď má Jorge 30 rokov, zamiluje sa do letušky Leslie a tajne sa s ňou ožení. Životné príbehy Chrisa a Jorgeho spočiatku nijako nesúvisia, ale keď dôjde k tragédii, nečakane sa prepoja spôsobom, aký by nikto nepredpokladal.
