George Valentin patrí k najväčším hviezdam nemého filmu. Spoznáte ho podľa typických zastrihnutých fúzikovov, bielej kravaty a fraku. Jeho účinkovanie v exotických príbehoch o intrigách a hrdinských činoch znamenalo veľký úspech pre filmové štúdio Kinograph, na čele ktorého stojí magnát Al Zimmer. Sláva Georgovi vyniesla elegantú manželku Doris, vlastného šoféra limuzíny Cliftona a vlastnú usmievavú tvár na plagátoch Kinographu. Žije presne takým štýlom ako jeho filmové postavy. Na filmových premiérach srdečne zdraví búrlivé davy fanúšikov a reportérov. Jeho hviezdna kariéra sa zdá neohroziteľná – až do chvíle, keď Hollywood ovládne nový fenomén - hovorený film. George touto technickou novinkou opovrhuje a označuje ju za nevkusné pobláznenie. V roku 1929 chce Kinograph úplne zastaviť výrobu nemých filmov a George sa musí rozhodnúť: buď prijme zvuk, ako to urobila mladá vychádzajúca hviezda Peppy Miller alebo bude riskovať pád do zabudnutia.
