Príbeh chlapca a jeho strýka, ktorý je súkromným detektívom, sa odohráva v ďalekej budúcnosti, kde spoločne žijú ľudia a roboti, nie však v mieri. Mnohí roboti sú nútení obývať vyhradené oblasti a je im prisúdená úloha podradných ľudských sluhov, čo samozrejme neprispieva k pokoju ani k harmonickému spolužitiu. Keď sa chlapec stretne s robotom Timom, dostanú sa spolu do mnohých komplikovaných situácií, v ktorých pochopí, aké dôležité sú city, ktoré ľudí odlišujú od ostatných bytostí.
