Anglicko tridsiatych rokov 12. storočia. Kráľ Henrich I. zomiera bez mužských potomkov a celá krajina mieri k nemilosrdnej vojne o dedičstvo po panovníkovi. V tom čase navštívi mladý kňaz Philip opátstvo v Kingsbridge. Nájde tam zomierajúceho starého opáta a vidí, že kláštor je zašlý a zanedbaný. Po skone opáta zostane Philip zaskočený, pretože ho mnísi zvolia za jeho nástupcu. Do Kingsbridge príde kamenár Tom Builder, ktorý tu hľadá prácu. Philip mu spočiatku nemôže nič ponúknuť.
