Voľná televízna adaptácia rovnomenného klasického sci-fi románu Johna Wyndhama rozpráva príbeh Billa Masena, ktorý sa jedného dňa prebudí vo svete, kde väčšina ľudí oslepla. Zničujúcou príčinou jeho slepoty je záblesk z meteorického roja, ktorý Bill Masen nemohol sledovať kvôli nehode na farme trifidov, pri ktorej nakrátko stratil zrak. Trifidy, živé rastliny, ktoré sa pôvodne pestovali len kvôli oleju, získali schopnosť chodiť a komunikovať medzi sebou a ich žihadlá plné jedu predstavujú hrozbu pre ľudstvo, ktoré sa ocitlo tvárou v tvár zákernému nepriateľovi. Bill Masen však nie je jediný, kto nestratil zrak. Rozpletajú sa tu aj osudy reportérky Jo Playtonovej, majora Cokera a zradného Torrenca. Tak sa začína vojna nielen s trifidmi, ale aj s maniakmi a šialencami medzi ľuďmi. Postapokalyptický svet sa prebúdza a nič už nebude ako predtým.
