Hlúpučký policajný inšpektor Gadget pripomína postavu komisára Clouseaua - potáca sa okolo svojich pridelených prípadov a ničomu nerozumie. Vládne však neuveriteľným arzenálom. Má k dispozícii vyskakovacie kolieskové korčule, vysúvacie ruky aj čiapku s vrtuľou, ktorá slúži ako helikoptéra. To všetko vymyslel geniálny inžinier a vedec, ktorý ho po smrteľnom úraze pri práci v Metro City prebral k životu. Žiaľ, mozog mu už opraviť nedokázal. Ani napriek tejto unikátnej výzbroji, ktorú nedokáže efektívne používať a skôr mu je na obtiaž, pretože ňou škodí sebe aj okoliu, sa mu nedarí zvíťaziť nad svojím úhlavným nepriateľom Dr. Clawom, geniálnym zločincom, ktorý riadi zločinecký syndikát M.A.D. a plánuje prevziať moc nad celým svetom. Ešte dobre, že Gadgetove prípady zaňho úspešne vyšetrí jeho šikovná neter Penny a jej pes Brain, ktorého Gadget nikdy nespozná, pretože šikovné zviera v teréne pátra a pracuje inkognito!
