V roku 1942 havaruje americký pilot Steve Trevor na neznámom ostrove, ktorý je obývaný len ženami - Amazonkami. Tie sú z príchodu muža na ostrov zaskočené a chcú ho čo najskôr poslať preč - aj tak si ale vypočujú jeho príbeh a sú priamo šokované hrôzami 2. svetovej vojny. Kráľovná Hypolita sa preto rozhodne, že víťazka Olympijských hier odprevadí Stevea do jeho rodnej krajiny a pomôže so zlom bojovať - a onou víťazkou nie je nikto iný ako dcéra kráľovnej Diana. Tá vo svojom neviditeľnom lietadle dopraví mladého Američana do jeho vlasti a za pomoci svojej nadľudské sily, lasa pravdy a "kúzelných náramkov" je ochotná čeliť nacistom a inému bezpráviu - stáva sa superhrdinkou menom Wonder Woman.
