Píše sa rok 1805 a v Petrohrade sa stretávame s mladou, žiarivou elitou ruskej šľachty Pierrom, Natašou a Andrejom. Sú to mladí ľudia plní nádejí, ambícií, hľadajúci zmysel života. Dobrosrdečný Pierre, ktorý je nevlastným synom najbohatšieho muža Ruska, chce meniť život k lepšiemu. Galantný Andrej je frustrovaný nad povrchnosťou svojho života a preto hľadá jeho zmysel, zatiaľ čo krásna Nataša hľadá skutočnú lásku. V tej dobe sa Napoleonova armáda približuje k ruským hraniciam a všetko, čomu títo mladí ľudia verili, sa stáva neisté. Pierre, Andrej a Nataša sa ocitnú v čase, kedy sa Ruská spoločnosť navždy zmení.
