Lance Clayton (Robin Williams) je od nekdaj sanjal o karieri bogatega in slavnega pisatelja, a se je moral na koncu sprijazniti z manj ugledno službo srednješolskega učitelja poezije. Njegovo zasebno življenje je podobno nezavidljivo – Lanceov edinec Kyle (Daryl Sabara) je neznosen tepec, ki se z očetom sploh ne pogovarja.
