Robert Ford (Casey Affleck), ki v Jesseju Jamesu (Brad Pitt) že od otroštva vidi vzornika, se skuša na vsak način pridružiti tolpi izobčencev iz Missourija, a se mu sčasoma zameri njihov kolovodja.
Zvezdnik svetovnega formata Brad Pitt ("Troy") igra legendarnega razbojnika Jesseja Jamesa v vestern drami, posneti po knjižni uspešnici "The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford" avtorja Rona Hansena. Jesse James (Brad Pitt) je karizmatičen, vraževeren in čemeren mož, kolovodja tolpe izobčencev, ki se še bolj kot njegovega vročekrvnega značaja bojijo njegovih strelskih spretnosti. Mladi Robert Ford (Casey Affleck, "Ocean's Twelve") v njem vidi vzornika in se pridruži tolpi izmečkov, vendar se mu sčasoma njihov vodja zameri.
