Frank Falenczyk (Ben Kingsley) obožuje svoje delo. Je poklicni morilec pri svoji poljski mafijski družini v Buffalu v New Yorku. Vendar ima Frank težave z alkoholom, zato zamoči pomembno nalogo in ogrozi družinsko podjetje. Tedaj ga njegov stric (Philip Baker Hall) pošlje v San Francisco na treznjenje. Frank ni preveč občutljiv fant, vendar se odloči za srečanja AA, dobi si sponzorja (Luke Wilson) in delo v mrtvašnici, kjer se zaljubi v prostaško Laurel, nevarno žensko, ki ne pozna zadržkov. Medtem se njegova družina v Buffalu spopada z novo irsko tolpo. Ko izbruhne nasilje, se mora Frank vrniti. S pomočjo Laurel se sreča z nekdanjimi tekmeci, vendar v novih okoliščinah. John Dahl je tokrat s sijajno režijo ustvaril zgodbo o dveh popolnoma različnih ljudeh, ki najdeta skupno točko.
