Happy Gilmore je zagret hokejist, ker pa ne zna dovolj dobro drsati, začne raje igrati golf. Ko ugotovi, da je zelo nadarjen in da bi lahko s tem športom dobro zaslužil, se pridruži profesionalcem. Če ne drugega, bo s prisluženim denarjem lahko rešil babico, ki ji hočejo zaradi neplačanih davkov zapleniti hišo. Toda golf je šport za urejene gospode, Happy pa izgleda, kot da bi ravnokar prišel z rockovskega koncerta. A prav zaradi tega fant postane medijska senzacija. Na igrišču se zna tudi hitro razjeziti in se ne sramuje niti kakšne kletvice. Ves pomp okoli Happyja gre močno v nos ošabnemu golfistu Shooterju McGavinu, ki zato proti njemu skuje zaroto. Medtem Happy sredi vsega kaosa spozna žensko svojega življenja.
