Penny Dreadful je mnogo več kot zgolj (še) ena serija grozljivih zgodb. Viktorijanski London je odličen okvir za serije z elementi strahu in groze, v katerem se mešajo usode ljudi z nadnaravnimi bitji, od znanih likov v njej nastopajo Frankenstein, vampirji z Drakulo na čelu, lovec nanje Van Helsing, Dorian Grey, se pravi pester nabor pošasti iz vseh vetrov. V večnem boju med dobrim in zlom je glavno junakinjo Vanessa Ives fantastično odigrala Eva Green. Poleg osrednje niti, sile zla želijo Venesso (ki je medij - most med naravnim in nadnaravnim) pritegniti na svojo stran in okronati za kraljico, serija odpira tudi vprašanja o emancipaciji žensk, seksualnosti, nesmrtnosti, predsodkih, siromaštvu in bedi. Ni površinska in še manj naravnana zgolj na posebne učinke, omenjene tematike pa so (žal) še vedno zelo aktualne.
