Po tem, ko skrivnostni virus izbriše devetdeset odstotkov človeštva, vampirji pridejo iz globin Zemlje, da zasužnjijo človeštvo in jih obravnavajo kot živino. Potem ko se naveliča darovanja krvi v zameno za zaščito, 12-letni Yuichiro Hyakuya in njegov najboljši prijatelj Mikaela Hyakuya skupaj z drugimi sirotami načrtujeta pobeg.
