V distopičnem bližnjem prihodnjem Los Angelesu prebivalci živijo pod režimom vojaške okupacije s strani organizacije, znane kot prehodna oblast. Oblast služi nezemeljski skupini, imenovani "gostitelji", o katerih je malo znano do kasneje v seriji (nezemeljska robotska rasa se znajde v lovu, ki je prišla na Zemljo, da bi ljudi uporabila kot zaveznike in delo v svoji bitki). Simbol sodelujočih sil ima stilizirane ptice roparice ali raptorje, ki dajejo svoj vzdevek, "Raps". Oblast uveljavlja politiko gostitelja prek militarizirane policije, imenovane Domovinska varnost, in je poimenovala "Redhats" za rdečo čelado za njihovo sicer črno taktično obleko.
