Leta 1667 se 28-letni Ludvik XIV. odloči premakniti dvor iz Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye blizu Pariza v očetovo nekdanjo lovsko kočo blizu zaselka Versailles, kjer namerava zgraditi največjo palačo na svetu. A obkrožen s plemiči, ki so bili izgnani iz svojega običajnega okolja, izčrpan proračun, afere in politične igre zapletajo stvari v vse bolj nevarne spletke...
