Oreki Houtarou je minimalistični srednješolec. Nekega dne se na prošnjo starejše sestre pridruži Klubu klasične literature. Tam spozna Chitando Eruja, Fukubeja Satoshija in Ibaro Mayako. Chitanda je mirna, lepa deklica, a ko reče: »Radovedna sem, postane utelešenje radovednosti.« Fukube je nasmejan fant s fantastičnim spominom, ki se imenuje baza podatkov. Ibara je nizka deklica in stroga do drugih in do sebe. Začnejo preiskovati primer, ki se je zgodil pred 45 leti. Namigi skrivnosti so skriti v stari zbirki del nekdanjih članov Klasičnega kluba. Zbirka nosi naslov "Hyouka."
