Ирански брачни пар суочава се са одлуком да напусти земљу како би својој једанестогодишњој девојчици пружио безбеднију будућност и безбрижније одрастање. Због тешке Алцхајмерове болести свога оца, Надер одлучује да остане у Ирану, због чега његова супруга тражи развод како би са ћерком могла оде из земље. Њих двоје суочавају се са проблемима, након којих Симин напушта стан у коме су живели. Девојчица остаје да живи са оцем, у нади да ће се мајка вратити, јер и сама зна да без ње не би никуда отишла без обзира на ситуацију. Привремена раздвојеност претвара се у праву агонију од тренутка када Надер доводи жену која ће пазити на његовог оца и дете док је он одсутан. Након дуге потраге за неговатељицом, трудна жена са малом девојчицом пристаје да пази на оца, а Надер, иако не претерано задовољан својим избором бива принуђен да повери оца и ћерку овој непознатој жени. Са женом ће у његов стан доћи и њени проблеми.
