Група британских заробљеника са заповедником Николсоном добија радни задатак у логору. Заповедник јапанског логора Саито не придржава се конвенције да су официри ослобођени рада у заробљеништву и Николсонов отпор строго кажњава. Не успевши да сломи отпор, и суочен с чињеницом да мост неће бити саграђен у задатом року, Саито прихвата Николсонов предлог да он и његови војници саграде мост на реци Квај. Под Николсоновим заповедништвом и уз помоћ неколицине официра војници започињу грађење. Сматра да мост мора бити савршено изграђен како би остао као пример вештине и знања британских војника.
