Stanovnici planete Thundera evakuišu se neposredno pre nego što je uništena. Progonila ih je grupa mutanata. Svi osim jednog od njihovih brodova za bekstvo su uništeni. Ostala je samo mala grupa Thunderana (Thundercats). Sa samo pola snage motora, grupa, koju je predvodio Jaga, morala je da postavi kurs ka najbližoj planeti. Jaga je komandovao njihovim brodom dok je ostalih sedam bilo u svojim staznim cevima. Jaga je poginuo na svom putu do Treće Zemlje i njihov brod se tamo srušio. Ubrzo su se sprijateljili sa raznim grupama u okolini i dizajnirali tvrđavu. Mumm-Ra - vekovno otelotvorenje zla, zajedno sa mutantima koji su uništili ostatak Thunderana su stalna pretnja. Ali Lion-O, novi lider Thundercats, sa svojim oružjem "Mač predznaka" će pomoći Thundercats da imaju stalnu šansu.
