U godini 2138, igranje virtuelne stvarnosti je u procvatu. Iggdrasil, popularna online igra je tiho ugašena jednog dana. Međutim, jedan igrač po imenu Momonga odlučuje da se ne odjavi. Momonga se zatim pretvara u sliku kostura kao "najmoćnijeg čarobnjaka". Svet nastavlja da se menja, a likovi koji nisu igrači (NPC) počinju da osećaju emocije. Nemajući roditelje, prijatelje ili mesto u društvu, ovaj običan mladić Momonga tada nastoji da preuzme novi svet koji je igra postala.
