Tonårskillen Stanley Yelnats (Shia LaBeouf) är otursförföljd. Ända sen hans farfars far drog en förbannelse över släkten har han befunnit sig på fel ställe vid fel tidpunkt. Så när han anklagas för en stöld han inte begått, är det precis som vanligt. Stanley döms till 18 månaders straffarbete i ett ökenläger för ungdomsbrottslingar. Under den glödheta solen tvingas fångarna varje dag att gräva ett stort hål i sanden - allt "i ett uppfostrande syfte". De övervakas av den stenhårde vakten Mister Siri (Jon Voight) och en fruktad anstaltschef (Sigourney Weaver). Men snart börjar Stanley och hans medfångar ana att fängelseledningen döljer något - är det verkligen uppfostran som är anledningen till det meningslösa grävandet... Holes är baserad på Louis Sachars hyllade och prisbelönta roman med samma namn (på svenska "Ett hål om dagen"). Detta är en spännande film med massor av humor och oväntade händelser. Shia LaBeouf gör rollen som den otursförföljde Stanley.
