Ett antal berättelser om människor som på olika sätt diskuterar sina liv över kaffe och cigarretter. Detta är en film som bygger på ett antal korta berättelser filmade vid olika tillfällen. Det börjar med "Coffee and Cigarettes I" (1986), med bl a Roberto Benigni. "Coffee and Cigarettes II: Memphis Version" (1989), här kallad "Twins". Med bl a Steve Buscemi. "Coffee and Cigarettes III: Somewhere in California". Vann Guldpalmen för kortfilm i Cannes 1993, med Tom Waits och Iggy Pop. Resten är en mix av nyinspelat material med tanke på att göra en långfilm.
