I källarvalvet i en sedan länge övergiven kyrka hittas ett mystiskt kärl som generationer av präster före vår tid vaktat i urminnes tider. Men dess flytande innehåll är äldre än så. Kanske flera miljoner år. Under ledning av en katolsk präst och en grupp unga vetenskapsmän undersöks fyndet på plats. När natten kommer får alla snart erfara att kärlet har en inneboende kraft bortom det mänskliga. De makabra dödsfallen avlöser varandra med en så ofattbar råhet att kraften inuti mycket väl kan tillhöra den renaste av all ondska… Satan själv!
