1950'lerde İtalya'daki küçük bir adadayız. Dünyaca ünlü Şilili komünist şair Pablo Neruda, siyasi sebeplerle ülkesi dışında yaşamak zorunda kaldığı sürenin küçük bir kısmını burada geçirir. Mektuplarını taşımakla görevli postacı naif Mario, Neruda'yla kısa zamanda mesafeli bir dostluk kurar. Usta ozanın verdiği tüyolarla hem içindeki şairi ortaya çıkarır hem de esmer güzeli Beatrice'nin kalbini kazanır. Neruda genç adama sosyalist fikirlerini aşılar ve kendini gerçekleştirmesine yardımcı olduğu Mario'nun gözünde giderek ilahlaşır. Ama usta ozanın peşindeki siyasi rakipleri bir yerde çok uzun süre kalmasına engel olmaktadır. Ayrılık vakti yaklaşır.
