Kaliforniya'nın küçük bir yerleşimi olan Santa Mira'nın sakinleri, bir süredir yakınlarının tuhaf davranışlar göstermesinden şikayetçidir. Doktor Miles Bennell olayı soğukkanlılıkla araştırmaya başlar. Mantıklı bir adam olan doktorun ilk başlardaki kuşkucu tavırları, kaçınılmaz gerçeğe yaklaştıkça yerini panik ve dehşete bırakır. Üstelik artık uzaylılar çoğunlukta olduklarından, kimin gerçek kimin taklit olduğunu anlamanın mümkün olmadığı bir kaos başlamıştır. İnsanlık için hiç umut yoktur...
