Moskova da yaşayan ve birbirlerine deli gibi aşık iki genç, Veronika ve Boris 2.Dünya Savaşı'nın başlaması ile birbirlerinden ayrılmak zorunda kalırlar. Askere gönüllü yazılan Boris, Veronika'nın doğum gününden bir gün önce cepheye gönderilir. Birbirlerine veda etme fırsatı bile bulamazlar. Boris'ten uzun süre haber alamayan Veronika, Boris 'in kuzeni Fyodor'un tecavüzüne uğrar ve sevmediği halde onunla evlenmek zorunda kalır. Bütün bu olanlar Veronika'ya Boris'i unutturmaya yetmez.
