Hikayenin kahramanı, Connecticut’tan kasabaya kısa süre önce gelen, batıl inançlara eğilimli, uzun boylu, zayıf bir okul müdürü olan Ichabod Crane’dir. Kasabanın en zengin adamının 18 yaşındaki kızı Katrina Van Tassel’e aşıktır. Kızın güzelliğinden etkileniyordur ama aynı zamanda onunla evlenmeyi aile servetini ele geçirmek için bir şans olarak da görüyordur.
