Bilim insanları insanların içgüdüsel dürtülerini ölçebilmek adına bir deney kurgulamaya karar verirler. Deneye göre 8 kişi gardiyan, 12 kişi tutuklu olarak yalancı bir hapishaneye alınırlar. Gardiyanlar, gardiyan rolünü; mahkumlar ise mahkum rolünü oynayacaklardır. Her şey bir oyun olarak başlar ancak durumun gittikçe daha ciddi bir hal almaya başlaması, oraya para için gelen yirmi kişiyi rollerinin içerisine mahkum eder. Artık sahte gardiyanlar gerçek gardiyan gibi davranmaya başlayacaklardır. Bilim insanları deneyin kontrolünü kaybedeceklerdir.
