Romeo ve Juliet, birbirine düşman olan iki ailenin çocuklarıdır. Karşılaştıkları ilk anda aşık olmuşlar ve böylece kavuşamama öyküleri başlamıştır. Juliet, Romeo'ya kavuşmak için ailesini yok saymayı göze alamaz ve kendini yok saymaya karar verir. Böylece rahibin yardımını alarak bir zehir içer; herkes onu ölmüş bilecektir. Ancak Romeo döndüğünde Julıet'in öldüğünü zanneder ve kendini öldürür. Romeo ve Juliet'te basit olarak aşk anlatılıyor denemez. Bunu "aileleri düşman, engellere rağmen vazgeçmeyen imkansız aşk" diye alımladığımızda daha doğru olur. Çünkü oyunun ana konusu en yalın haliyle, aşk ölümü bile göze alır şeklinde özetlenir.
