Film líčí právní spor uznávané spisovatelky a historičky Deborah E. Lipstadtové (Rachel Weisz) proti Davidovi Irvingovi (Timothy Spall), který ji obvinil z urážky na cti. Lipstadtová totiž veřejně označila Irvinga za člověka popírajícího holocaust. V anglickém právním systému padá v případě urážky na cti důkazní břemeno na žalovaného, proto musí Lipstadtová a její právní tým, vedený Richardem Ramtonem (Tom Wilkinson), dokázat, že k holocaustu skutečně došlo.
