Claude Bukowski (John Savage) fra Oklahoma ankommer til New York for at lade sig hverve til hæren, men møder i Central Park en gruppe langhårede hippier. De dyrker 'peace, love and understanding' og holder fest i parken. Det synes Claude er mere spændende end militæret, så han bliver hængende og forelsker sig i den smukke Sheila (Beverly D'Angelo). Han bliver venner med hippiernes pacifistiske leder Berger (Treat Williams), der opfordrer ham til at erklære sin kærlighed til Sheila. Det gør han - og det hvirvler ham ud i et gigantisk eventyr.
