Brasilianske Francisco Manoel da Silva, også kendt som barfodsbanditten Cobra Verde. Han er opsynsmand i en sukkerplantage, men bliver uvenner med ejeren og som straf bliver han sendt til Vestafrika, for at sætte gang i slavehandlen med Brasilien i begyndelsen af 1800-tallet. Dette er både livsfarligt og en umulig opgave, men Cobra Verde gør det umulige; han tilraner sig magten og begynder at sende slaver hjem. Han bliver både rig og mægtig, men begynder snart at indse, at han bare er en brik i et farligt spil.
