Milliardæren Nerio Winch findes druknet. Hvem skal nu arve hans finansimperium? Winch har ingen familie - og dog. Det viser sig nemlig, at den mægtige mand har en adoptivsøn, som nu er voksen og enearving af hans imperium. Uheldigvis er Largo Winch havnet i et brasiliansk fængsel. Og det er kun begyndelsen på Largo's problemer, for stærke kræfter er parat til at gå langt for at fingre i familieformuen.
