I år 2000 er Guy Montag medlem af et brandkorps, der ikke mere slukker brande, men som påsætter dem i huse, hvor der findes bøger. Bøgernes budskab er farligt for de diktatorer, som regerer landet, landet som er i krig med en ukendt fjende. Da Guy møder Clarisse, begynder han at sætte spørgsmål ved verdenen, som han kender den, og han begynder at samle bøger, mens hans kone Linda på alle måder er pacificeret af tv-skærmene i stuen med virkelighedsfjernt fiktion.
