I middelalderens Europa blev jøderne udsat for forfølgelse og boede i slumkvarterer i de store byer. I en af Prags ghettoer skaber rabbineren Judah Loew et væsen af ler og giver den liv med en magisk formel. Der Golem blev skabt for at beskytte det jødiske folk. Golem er en af de tidlige eksempler på tysk ekspressionisme og har haft stor betydning for gysergenren i over 100 år.
