Den sexede og manipulerende krimiforfatterinde Catherine Tramell bliver mistænkt for mord, da hendes elsker dør under mistænkelige omstændigheder i en bilulykke. For at få lavet en psykologisk undersøgelse af hende beder politimanden Roy Washburn psykiateren Michael Glass tage sig af opgaven. Da Glass møder den intelligente og forføriske kvinde, bliver han straks forblændet af hende, men alligevel går det hurtigt op for ham, at hun skjuler store hemmeligheder. Samtidig begynder mennesker omkring ham at blive myrdet en efter en, og spørgsmålet er, om det er hende, der er morderen?
