Alfred Hitchocks spændende 1942 krigstidsgyser har Robert Cummings i hovedrollen som en Los Angeles flyvemaskinearbejder, der bliver vidne til en nazi-agents brandbombning af fabrikken, hvor han arbejder. Ved eksplosionen bliver Cummings bedste ven dræbt, og han bliver fejlagtigt beskyldt for sabotage. For at rense sit navn, begynder Cummings en ubarmhjertig jagt tværs gennem landet, der fører ham fra Boulder Dam til New Yorks Radio City Music Hall, og endelig til en oprivende konfrontation øverst i Frihedsgudinden.
