Pigen med paraplyerne er en bittersød musicalklassiker, som har rørt mange romantiske hjerter, lige siden den havde premiere i 1964. Catherine Deneuve fik sit gennembrud i hovedrollen som den unge forelskede Genevieve. Hendes hjertes udkårne er den unge mekaniker Guy, der drømmer om at få sin egen benzinstation. Men Guy bliver indkaldt til krigen i Algeriet, og Genevieve opdager, hun er gravid. Hun tvinges nu til at beslutte sig for, om hun vil vente i det uvisse på sin elskede, eller om hun skal tage imod et ægteskabstilbud fra en velhavende diamanthandler.
